The opening bout on the UFC 207: Nunes vs. Rousey PPV main card in Las Vegas, Nevada featured flyweights Louis Smolka and Ray Borg, both of whom were coming off of losses in their most recent fights. This was a catchweight contest after Borg had missed weight by 3.5 pounds.
Borg missed on a head kick early in round 1, Smolka tried to take his back, but Borg was able to take him down and attempt a d’arce choke. Smolka scrambled into a scarfhold position, then Borg took his back. Borg slammed Smolka down later in the round and had full mount on the Hawaiian, who was bleeding out of his right eye. Borg went for an omoplata but Smolka survived it, and then attacked Ray’s leg. Borg delivered some big ground-and-pound. All things considered, Borg had the clear advantage heading into round 2.
The scramble-heavy theme to this fight continued into the 2nd. Smolka was again muscled down and then flipped into full mount, but Borg out-scrambled him again. Louis attacked with a leglock but Borg got out of it and smacked Smolka with a big right hand. Borg continued to dominate Smolka and he was in danger of being choked out by an arm-triangle, but he survived it. Smolka dropped to guard with a feeble guillotine and Borg easily escaped it.
In between rounds, Borg told his corners that he thought he broke his ankle. Whatever the case, Borg just powered through Smolka and took him down once more in the 3rd. Smolka threw his legs up for a triangle but Borg was privy to it and then continues his BJJ clinic. He nearly had Smolka out with an arm-triangle, but couldn’t finish it and returned to full mount. An exhausted Smolka had 1 minute left to salvage himself a miracle win. It didn’t
Official result: Ray Borg def. Louis Smolka by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-26)
