The UFC’s sale to WME/IMG has led to some bloodletting of staff, and there has been a lot of speculation about whether that will extend to the announcers. Joe Rogan is already working a reduced schedule and has indicated that he might not be around much longer. But what about his broadcast partner Mike Goldberg?
Well, if you believe Chael Sonnen, he may be on his way out, to be replaced by a big name.
On a recent episode of his podcast, Chael did his usual thing where he drops a nugget of news, then pretends to walk it back. This time it was in reference to Goldberg and his possible replacement (comments begin around the 1:11:00 mark):
“Is Jim Rome going to join Joe Rogan? Is he going to take that offer? Did I just say something that is not public information? Let's move on...”
Rome, if you don’t already know, hosts a very popular syndicated radio show aptly titled The Jim Rome Show. Dana White and other UFC personalities have been guests on the show many times, and Rome has a friendly relationship with the promotion.
While this might just be Chael’s typical bluster, Dana himself has hinted at a new broadcast team as well. Just last week, he stated that he’s looking at forming a “dream team” of UFC commentators. He praised Rogan as the best ever in the same interview, so it clearly looks like he’s talking about replacing Goldberg.
Would Rome make a good UFC play-by-play man? I have no idea, but he is a bombastic personality and could potentially add a lot to the show. Right now it’s just a rumor though, so take that for what it’s worth.
