In last night’s HBO Boxing main event, WBO 130 lbs champion Vasyl Lomachenko (7-1, 5 KOs) picked apart the heavy-handed Nicholas Walters (30-1-1, 24 KOs) to successfully defend his title. The two-time Olympic gold medalist, who has an amateur record of 396-1, turned up the heat on the Jamaican in rounds 5-7, and at the end of a very one-sided 7th, Walters opted not to continue. As Lance Pugmire of the LA Times pointed out, this version of “No mas!” came exactly 36 years and 1 day after Roberto Duran quit his rematch vs. Sugar Ray Leonard.
You can watch highlights of Lomachenko’s win at the top of the page, as well as additional clips at the bottom. Here’s Fraser Coffeen’s play-by-play of the final round:
Round 7: Lomachenko picks up the pace here, seeming to look for the finish within the next few rounds. He’s landing clean, powerful shots, and he’s starting to land a lot of them. Lomachenko also manages to get him against the ropes a few times. 10-9 Lomachenko
And in the break between rounds, Walters’s corner waves off the fight.
