Andrew Holbrook picked up the biggest win of his career in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 101. He defeated 22-year-old prospect Jake Matthews in Matthews’ home turf via split decision.

It was a very gritty performance from both Holbrook and Matthews. Holbrook’s gameplan, he said after the fight, was to pressure his opponent, and he certainly stuck with his gameplan throughout the 15-minute bout. Matthews found difficulty dealing with the pressure, and Holbrook did relatively well on the mat when the fight was there.

Matthews landed his fair share of shots on the feet, but it wasn’t enough for the Australian to get the job done. The TUF: Nations winner went for a couple takedowns himself in the fight, which ended up being a mistake — Holbrook usually was able to reverse the position, and Matthews found himself having to defend submission attempts from Holbrook a few times.

It was a close but clear bout in favor of Holbrook, who was rewarded the nod from the judges. Holbrook was the biggest betting underdog on the entire card.
