Eddie Alvarez says his biggest mistake was boxing too much with Conor McGregor at UFC 205, instead of following the game plan.

Eddie Alvarez lost his belt to Conor McGregor at UFC 205. He was getting dropped multiple times in the first round, and was eventually finished in the second. According to Alvarez, his biggest mistake was not sticking to the game plan.

“The idea wasn’t to go in there and box, and stand in front of him. I didn’t fight a good fight,” he said. “We started throwing kicks, and the kicks were successful. I would’ve kicked more, and we didn’t wrestle enough. The idea was to go in there and wrestle a guy who likes to box, and I didn’t do that.”

“Not sure why I didn’t do that, but I paid the price. He capitalized.”

Alvarez says it was a big mistake to somewhat be “lulled” and made him fight at Conor’s pace and play to his strengths.

“It was foolish. I’ll be the first one to admit. That was not my intention going into that. That was stupid. I paid for not sticking to the game plan.”

Alvarez also stated that he wasn’t completely surprised with Conor’s power, and said it was more of his speed and precision that did him in.
