After Conor McGregor lost to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, the Irishman became obsessed with cardio training.

The training seemed to pay off, as McGregor went five rounds with Diaz in the rematch at UFC 202, beating the ultra-distance runner via majority decision.

McGregor has carried that ethos into his headlining bout at UFC 205, which will see the featherweight champion challenge Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt at Madison Square Garden.

Alvarez, though, who captured the 155-pound title at UFC Fight Night 90, believes McGregor’s strenuous cardio program is a waste of time.

Alvarez is one of the most decorated lightweight fighters of all time, a two-time Bellator champion and now the king of the UFC’s LW throne. The Philadelphia local has beaten the likes of Shinya Aoki, Michael Chandler, Gilbert Meledenz, Anthony Pettis, and Rafael dos Anjos.

Alvarez traded barbs and held his own with McGregor at the UFC’s New York press conference in September, claiming that he’d never felt so unthreatened by a fighter at a staredown.

UFC 205, which features Alvarez vs. McGregor in the main event, takes place next month, November 12, at Madison Square Garden Arena in New York.
