Welterweight champion Cecilia Brækhus (35) defended her WBO, WBA, WBC and IBF belts yesterday by knocking out Anne Sophie Mathis in the second round in Oslo, Norway. Mathis is an accomplished, french boxer known for her knockout power and for knocking out Holly Holm in 2011. The Norwegian Brækhus was expected to win this rematch against Mathis on points, by evading and outscoring the aggressive Mathis, but surprised everyone (including herself) with the second round KO.
After the fight, Brækhus dismissed the questions about future rematches and instead chose to call out Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino (31) for a boxing match. Brækhus has previously been in talks with the UFC, but although she was originally a kickboxer (like Holly Holm), it seems unlikely she will make the transition to MMA at such a late point in her martial arts career. Both Brækhus and Cyborg have shown interest in fighting each other and complimented in social media the past few months.
Cecilia Brækhus is currently undefeated as a boxer, with 29 wins and 8 KOs.
