Looks like we have another convert from the world of professional wrestling into the MMA cage, except this time we have a man who has years of experience doing both.
Alberto 'El Presidente', FKA Alberto Del Rio, was just announced as the new President of Campbell McLaren's Combate Americas at an event held in New York City, days away from the promotion's debut in NY state this Friday.
'I am going to be like the Mexican version of Dana White," Alberto jokingly told us during the press conference. 'I'm going to be finding talent, we want to have great fighters but we want those fighters to be stars. And in order to do that, we want to teach them how to be entertainers. Not just great fighters, we have great fighters in Combate, but we want them to sell tickets, we want them to make money for the company, and for themselves."
Alberto also explained how this position came initially out of Campbell's requests for the former WWE heavyweight champion to fight in the league, but after discovering his body was not quite up for that, he turned his attention to something a bit safer.
We also discussed his thoughts on CM Punk's UFC debut at UFC 203, as well as the recent news that another former WWE superstar, Ryback, has been courting Bellator MMA to fight under their banner.
Here is the official info on Alberto via 'Combate Americas' press release, along with the full video of the press conference announcing his new role with the company:
A former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Rodriguez, the son of Lucha Libre legend Dos Caras, Sr., also competed in 14 professional MMA bouts – 2 of them under the promotion of former Japanese juggernaut PRIDE Fighting Championships - between 2001 and 2010, as Alberto "Dos Caras, Jr." Rodriguez. He compiled an overall record of 9-5 in the sport, with 7 of his victories coming by way of submission.
In his new executive role with Combate Americas, "El Presidente" will be actively involved in all aspects of athlete relations and development, from recruitment to enhancing their showmanship skills.
"A storied fighter, with a following throughout Mexico and the U.S., Alberto brings a tremendous amount of knowledge of what it means to be in competition, coupled with an ability to communicate his passion for the sport, to his new role," said Campbell McLaren, Combate Americas founder and CEO. "From working with Alberto in the past, we have gotten to know him very well, and are thrilled to have him on our team in an executive capacity."
"I am excited to enter a new chapter in my career in combat sports, and to have the opportunity to spearhead the Combate Americas mission of delivering to fight fans everywhere, an authentic and first-rate Hispanic MMA product," said Rodriguez.
'Combate Americas: Empire Rising" is headlined by John "Sexy Mexy" Castaneda (11-2) and Gustavo Lopez (6-1) as they face off in the first world championship bout in league history at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York, on Friday, October 14. You can watch the event live on beIN SPORTS En Español and UFC FIGHT PASS.
