Plenty of tickets still available for Mayweather vs. Berto

This may surprise you, but fans aren't champing at the bit to watch Floyd Mayweather fight Andre Berto.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao was billed as the superfight of the century, and (quite predictably) didn't turn out to be the classic that many angry paying fans had expected. We don't know how this will hurt Pacquiao as a draw as he ends his career, but we do know that Floyd Mayweather's next fight at the weekend is shaping up to be a flop.

Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) is facing off against Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on Saturday night in Las Vegas, and there's absolutely no buzz or excitement whatsoever. Of course, fans have probably turned against Mayweather because of the Pacquiao fight, but it doesn't help when Berto's last fight was on Spike TV, has no considerable fanbase, and he peaked about 4-5 years ago (at which time he still was never a real threat to Floyd). According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, there are tickets aplenty available just a few days out from the pay-per-view main event:

With a little more than four days until Mayweather's fight against Andre Berto at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Ticketmaster shows there are more than 2,100 seats available -- and that doesn't even count the tickets that are typically held by the promoters.

That's despite the fact that the face value of this fight -- ranging from $125 to $1,500 -- is significantly lower than the prices for Mayweather's fight in May against Manny Pacquiao.

The pay-per-view price is $75 for HD and $65 for SD, which is the same cost as the November 21st fight between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez, which is probably going to be more entertaining and is undeniably a better, more compelling fight.

Since the superfight with Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, all of Mayweather's PPVs have done at least 900,000 reported buys. I don't expect this to keep the streak going. The worst-selling PPV he's had as a regular HBO or Showtime attraction is way back in 2006 against Carlos Baldomir, which drew in 320,000 buys. He's still popular enough that I doubt he'll drop from 4.4 million to the 300k range that sharply, but relatively speaking, this is going to be a flop.

Just remember that in 2013, Mayweather was telling Robert Guerrero "This ain't Berto!" Well this IS Berto, and no one cares. Maybe if he'd fought Amir Khan things would've been different, but fight #49 for Mayweather is his universally derided joke matchup, one year after Pacquiao fought Chris Algieri in November 2014 (and completely tanked on PPV).
