No other fighter came as close as John Dodson to dethrone UFC flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson. When both men met for the first time in 2013, the heavy-handed Dodson managed to floor the champ two times in the first two rounds, and only lost a close decision in the end.
Not this time, though.
In the rematch at UFC 191 last Saturday, Dodson wanted to make a statement, to win decisively. Instead, he got dominated for five rounds and left the area with a battered face.
"Both of us have evolved, and we've shown that," Dodson said. "We've shown that he has more aggressive power coming at me, and he landed a lot more shots to my face. I look like a monster. I look like (Rafael) dos Anjos."
This last week has been a rollercoaster ride for the charismatic 125-pounder. Shortly after arriving in Las Vegas for fight week, he left again to welcome his first-born baby. If this life-changing experience has influenced his performance at UFC 191 or not, remains unknown. But despite two losses to the champion, Dodson promised to work his way back up to a title shot again.
"There is nothing wrong with what happened today besides Demetrious Johnson still being the champion. He's still a great fighter. I didn't win this fight, but next time I'm coming out a lot stronger and a lot harder. You guys will see me back again, with a better face looking sexier than ever."
