ADCC 2015 results recap: Orlando Sanchez wins first ADCC gold

Bloody Elbow recaps the results from ADCC 2015 from last weekend in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Here, we look at the over 99KG division where Fabricio Werdum's team mate, Orlando Sanchez took home gold.

Guilherme Cruz, MMA Fighting

On Sunday afternoon, Orlando Sanchez, a close friend and training partner of UFC champion, Fabricio Werdum, took home gold in a division filled with shocks at ADCC 2015. Sanchez may well have benefited from the last-minute pull out of tournament favourite, Bernardo Faria. Sanchez's performances throughout were impressive, his victories over Dean Lister and Vinny Magalhaes stood out in an overall faultless run out.

With both Orlando Sanchez and Jared Dopp pulling off big upsets this division was packed with entertainment.

ADCC +99kg
Official results:

1st place: Orlando Sanchez

2nd place: Jared Dopp

3rd place: Vinny Magalhaes

What was the high point of the tournament?

As impressive as Orlando Sanchez's performances were, this tournament will be remembered for the shocking performances of one man, Jared Dopp. A brown belt, Dopp secured wins against numerous seasoned black belts throughout the weekend with effective, methodical performances. Without a doubt, Dopp's performances were the high of the over 99kg division.

Where do the finalists go from here?

Like Davi Ramos, Orlando Sanchez is too angling for a UFC contract. Sanchez plans to follow in the footsteps of his friend and mentor, UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, by seamlessly maneuvering from a successful grappling career to a highly-profitable MMA career. Expect Sanchez, who hold an unblemished MMA record, to compete on the regional circuit once or twice more before the years end and if he is successful we may see him inside the Octagon.

Jared Dopp has a very bright future ahead of himself. For a brown belt to be so successful at his first ADCC is incredibly impressive and the scary thing is Dopp is nowhere near reaching his potential. Expect Dopp to be among the favourites for ADCC 2017.
