Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones may be suspended from competing in the promotion, but that hasn't stopped the 28-year-old from helping his teammates prepare in the gym. The Greg Jackson fighter has been working with women's bantamweight title-challenger Holly Holm in preparation for her fight with Ronda Rousey at UFC 193.
According to Holm's coach, Brandon Gibson, the former pound for pound #1 has been working extensively with the female boxing champion.
"He's been helping Holly Holm a ton," Gibson told MMA Fighting at UFC 191 media day Thursday. "Jon is a leader and he inspires the team and we just try to do the same for him. We try to inspire him wherever we can. He's getting stronger ever day."
Jon Jones has been largely absent from the media since his alleged hit-and-run in Albuquerque, New Mexico earlier in April. 'Bones' was stripped of his light-heavyweight title and suspended indefinitely by the UFC shortly after the incident, but Jones' presence in the gym is as strong as ever.
Even after the incident, Jones was helping teammate Andrei Arlovski prepare for the Travis Browne fight at UFC 187.
"He helped Andrei a lot for the Travis Browne fight," Gibson said. "That was kind of after he got in trouble and he would still go in there."
Gibson says Jones brings a different perspective and view when training with Holm, and believes the bantamweight will be primed and ready to take on reigning champion, Ronda Rousey.
"Jon is very creative and [Mike] Winkeljohn has been grooming Holly since she was a teenager," Gibson said. "Him and Greg [Jackson] and Coach Izzy [Martinez] have put in a lot of work with Holly. I think Jon just brings a different perspective and a different view, whether it's technically or the mental aspect of it, to help prepare our sister for this championship fight and to take this title."
Holly Holm will challenge Ronda Rousey for the bantamweight title at UFC 193 on November 14th at the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
