Can Conor McGregor succeed in the UFC's lightweight division? The brash Irishman claimed that once he beats featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 194, he will go on to conquer the lightweight divison too.
155-pound champion Rafael dos Anjos isn't so sure about that.
"I don't think he can succeed even in the featherweight division", he told GNP1.de. "He's not beating the top guys. Who has this guy beat? He fought Dennis Siver, which was a top 15 and he got a title shot against Jose Aldo. How about Frankie Edgar? How about Chad Mendes in a good shape? He got a ten days notice. How about, you know, Jeremy Stephens? How about Cub Swanson, all those top guys in the division? Even Charles Oliveira, the Brazilian, would kill him."
However, the past has shown that the UFC is more than willing to push their PPV draw quickly into title opportunities. So should McGregor really top Aldo, a direct superfight against the then-lightweight titleholder would definitely not lie outside the realms of possibility.
"I think, if he beats Aldo -- which I think is really hard -- but if he does, I will be happy to welcome him," said dos Anjos. "He got a big mouth, he talk well for the people. He's a comedian guy, and he's bring a lot of media to him. If he's gonna come to lightweight division, I'm here and will make sure to smash him."
