Tonight, a 4-man, 1-night, light heavyweight tourney will go down in San Jose on the Bellator Dynamite card which will serve to crown a new Number 1 contender to face off against the champion of the division. The competitors are Phil Davis, Emanuel Newton, Linton Vassell and Muhammed Lawal aka King Mo.
Organization president, Scott Coker has been shaking things up at Bellator since he stepped into the role almost two years ago, and appears to have a good insight of how to get the most entertainment value from his roster. The ambitious card they've put together for tonight is no exception, and features not only mixed martial arts action, but several kickboxing matches that will take place in a Glory ring (the two orgs are co-promoting), some of those matches even happening simultaneously with MMA bouts.
With kickboxing being a featured attraction on the card, and a crossover appearance from welterweight striking powerhouse, Paul Daley, fans and media alike are wondering how many more crossovers we might see in the near future. On a recent episode of the Three Amigos Podcast, Lawal answered the question of whether he might be making a foray into the kickboxing ring in pretty entertaining fashion. Here's what he had to say:
"I will do a kickboxing match versus a bum. Maybe against a guy with no legs [laughs]. Yeah, that's who I'll fight, a guy with no legs that can't kick, with a soft punch. Let me tell you something, I had the unfortunate luxury to spar with Melvin Manhoef and got my ass whooped. I sparred with Murthel Groenhart , got my ass kicked. Sparred with Jorgen Kruth, got my ass kicked. Sparred with Tyrone Spong and Andy Ristie, guess what? I got my ass whooped. So, what does that tell you? Mo, stay away from kickboxing, because they will beat your ass!"
Mo takes on Linton Vassell in the first round of the light heavyweight tournament tonight. The card will air live on Spike TV at 9 PM EST.
