It sounds like the UFC has a definite plan this time around. Former lightweight champion and featherweight title contender Frankie Edgar may be gearing up to fight Chad Mendes at the Ultimate Fighter Season 22 Finale, on December 11th, in Las Vegas, Nevada, but Mendes may not be the only fighter on his mind when he puts himself through training camp. Edgar recently revealed, via an interview with UFC.com, that if anything happens to the UFC 194 headline fight between Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo, he'll be the guy getting a phone call from Dana White:
"If someone gets hurt I'm the guy stepping in, and that's from Dana White. You can print that in bold letters!"
The main goal behind being "the guy," according to Edgar, isn't about getting a big money fight or being a big star, it's about getting the UFC title back around his waist:
"I want that title. That, to me, is the most important thing. Conor may be the money fight, but when you win a title that stays with you forever. Money comes and goes. You're a champ for the rest of your life. I did it at 155 and I want to do it at 145."
A fight between Edgar and McGregor would be a hell of a bout and a tough one to pick. As for a second bout with Aldo, that's a bit of a tougher sell. It's hard to think that Aldo vs. Edgar stays the headliner on a card with Chris Weidman vs. Luke Rockhold in the main event. Either way though, in a battle of interim champ vs. champ Edgar would get himself a shot at a belt as an injury replacement.
