You know those nights when the judges totally ruin an important bout? Tonight was one of those nights. The co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Nashville was widely viewed a striker vs. grappler bout. Striking won. Yet it didn't.
Beneil Dariush couldn't get Michael Johnson to the floor. Johnson looked like he was cruising through every round, outlanding Dariush and even dropping him in the first. He was the one coming forward, and connecting with hard punches and solid counters. Dariush was definitely getting his own shots in, scoring with a crisp jab and some leg kicks. But it certainly seemed like Johnson won all three rounds in my eyes, though the third was close.
The judges disagreed, giving it to Dariush by split decision. Two judges gave him a 29-28 win, while one had it for Johnson 29-28.
Dariush was as shocked by the decision as anyone. Johnson was mad, and rightfully so. I'm not one for hyperbole much, but this is a leading candidate for robbery of the year so far. Yeah, it was that bad.
Hopefully Johnson gets his win bonus at least, if not a rematch. Because that was a travesty.
