World Series of Fighting had the novel idea of going up against UFC 190, so the big moments out of last night's show are going to be completely drowned in endless Ronda Rousey discussion. The biggest fight of the night was the main event between welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares and Jake Shields, who planned to break Palhares' arm and had continually called him a "dirty fighter."
In a very competitive grappling battle, with Shields having the advantage in the opening two rounds, the first controversy arose from a series of warnings from referee Steve Mazzagatti -- right away an ominous sign something bad was going to happen -- to Palhares for eye-gouging and raking his fingers across Shields' face. Here are the GIFs in order. The last one prompted Shields to audibly yell "Ref! What the f*ck?!"
No point deduction was ever issued, and in the 3rd round, Palhares cranked a nasty kimura on Shields that forced him to tap many times over. Palhares didn't let go until after Mazzagatti had intervened, and Shields popped Rousimar in the face after the stoppage. (Gif via Zombie Prophet)
We'll see what comes out of this. According to Ali Abdel-Aziz, Palhares' win bonus has been withheld by the Nevada Athletic Commission. What should've been the biggest win of his career has turned into another major point of contention given his history of hanging on to submission holds longer than he probably should.
Meanwhile, Marlon Moraes had a controversy-free bantamweight title defense against Sheymon Moraes. The reigning champion took apart Sheymon with his fantastic striking abilities, then dropped him midway through the 3rd with a big left hook. Marlon advanced to side control, then took took Sheymon's back and got the tap with a slick rear-naked choke. (Vine via Zombie Prophet)
