WSOF 22 GIF: Palhares submits Shields with kimura, continues cranking after tap

Rousimar Palhares became the first man to ever tap Jake Shields in an MMA fight, but it's Rousimar Palhares, so there was controversy involved.

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Rousimar Palhares' UFC career ended when he refused to let go of a kneebar on Mike Pierce even after Pierce had tapped and the referee had intervened. It wasn't a first time offense, hence he was cut after the win. In the biggest win of his career at World Series of Fighting 22, Palhares submitted Jake Shields with a kimura in the 3rd round. A stunning win for Palhares, who became the first man to submit Shields, except he did so and then some ... again. Shields clearly tapped and Palhares continued to violently crank on it, much to the dismay and anger of Shields. Here's the GIF, courtesy of Zombie Prophet:

There was more controversy preceding this finish, as Palhares repeatedly gouged Shields eyes when Shields had him mounted in the previous round. Controversy is seemingly guaranteed when Palhares is fighting, and the reigning WSOF welterweight champion is well on his way to being the talk of the MMA world on Sunday, for all the wrong reasons.
