List of MMA fighters who have pulled out of the most fights

Take a look at the fighters most notorious for pulling out of fights.

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Mixed Martial Arts is a sport often plagued with injuries. In a world where the top athletes sharpen and hone their craft with punches, kicks, knees, elbows, slams and submission holds, it's simply the nature of the beast. Each year the MMA Gods play their cruel game, plucking our favorite fighters from our favorite matchups, devastating entire events with a tsunami of injuries.

The latest card to be crippled with injury complications is this Saturday's UFC 189 event in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jose Aldo was originally scheduled to defend his featherweight strap against 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor in the main event, but a rib fracture suffered during a sparring session forced the reigning champ to pull out at the last minute.

And then there's poor John Hathaway. Originally set for a main event slot with Gunnar Nelson, the Brit has been removed from the most anticipated event of the year due to another devastating injury.

To provide more clarity on the issue, sportsofanarchy.com have compiled a list of the top 40 fighters who have pulled out of the most fights. Check it out below:

Alarmingly, five of the fighters featured in the top ten have failed drug tests in their careers. Matt Riddle, Thiago Tavares, Thiago Alves, Thiago Silva and Vitor Belfort have all tested positive for banned substances in the past, which may or may not coincide with the high volume of fight withdrawals.

Jose Aldo, who received criticism for pulling out of UFC 189 is the only current champion in the top 10. Due to his departure, Chad Mendes and Conor McGregor will battle for the featherweight title in the new main event on July 11.
