It's the eve of UFC 190 and headlining fighters Ronda Rousey and Bethe Correia are almost set to lock horns at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The two women have traded verbal barbs since the bout was announced earlier in March and it seems Correia may have turned things up a notch in her latest tirade.
The Brazilian says her mother instructed her to break Rousey's jaw and knock her out in 10 seconds.
" 'Please, finish this fight in 10 seconds. Knock her out, break her jaw,' Correia told MMAFighting's Guilherme Cruz on Thursday. It's a mom thing. No mom wants to see a daughter get beat up, get hurt, and Ronda's mom thinks about it. It's easier to go for a takedown and lock an armbar, you don't get hurt. My mom wants me to go there, throw the first punch, Ronda goes down, and I go back to her arms. It's normal."
So far none of Rousey's opponents have managed to capitalize on any openings in the stand-up department, as the 28-year-old has used her Olympic judo abilities to force the fight to the mat. Four of Rousey's five UFC title fights have ended in the first round, with all five ending via stoppage.
Whilst Bethe Correia is fighting on home soil in Brazil's capital, the Brazilian fans seem magnetized towards Rousey's aura. During the UFC 190 open workouts, some Rio de Janeiro locals were seen crying whilst Rousey made her way through the crowd, and a little boy even managed to scamper onto the stage, desperate for a hug from his MMA idol.
Ronda Rousey and Bethe Correia will battle for the women's bantamweight championship in the main event of UFC 190 on Saturday, August 1st.
