Conor McGregor's family were in 'terrible shock' during UFC 189

Conor McGregor's father describes the emotional turmoil the family suffered during UFC 189's main event.

So confident in his son's abilities, Tony McGregor was shocked to see his boy struggle with Chad Mendes during the main event of UFC 189. While Conor McGregor scored the TKO in the second round, the brash Irishman got his first taste of adversity in the Octagon on July 11. Mendes blasted McGregor with strikes on the feet and bloodied the 27-year-old up with elbows on the ground.

Tony McGregor says the entire family were mortified when Chad Mendes took it to the SBG fighter.

"It was an awesome fight to see and witness him lifting that gold belt, but before that, it was a terrible shock to the family and it was a big shock to the Irish fans as well," Tony said on The MMA Hour. "We had never seen Conor being taken to the ground like that before."

According to the eldest McGregor, the Irish fans were also stunned when their hometown hero was busted up by Mendes.

"I went into shock when I saw him getting tossed around by Chad. We didn't expect that at all. I was speaking to the fans after and they told me they'd cried during that."

"Nobody was expecting it whatsoever."

McGregor's battle with Mendes was too much for his mother Margaret; Mrs McGregor rushed backstage in a panic.

"My wife panicked and she ran into the back, his two sisters were huddled together hysterical and I think Dee [McGregor's girlfriend] was rooted to the spot crying as well.

"And this was all in the first round."

UFC 189 was billed as the most promoted and anticipated event in UFC history, with McGregor trotting the globe alongside Jose Aldo for the UFC's exhaustive world tour in March. Tony thinks all the promotional duties took a toll on his son in the fight.

"He was so drained of emotions and so drained physically after this fight, so just as a family we put our arms around him and said congratulations, this is an amazing achievement. We were all just shaking with joy."

Conor McGregor will be back to work for the newest series of The Ultimate Fighter. 'The Notorious' will coach opposite Team Alpha Male leader Urijah Faber for the Team Europe vs. Team USA showdown which airs on September 9th.
