UFC Fight Night 71 results recap: Frank Mir vs. Todd Duffee

Check out the recap of the main event of UFC Fight Night 71, where Frank Mir turned in another strong performance in his fight with Todd Duffee.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

In a special Wednesday edition of UFC Fight Night, Todd Duffee and Frank Mir headlined the promotion's first show in San Diego since August 2010. The power advantage was theoretically in Duffee's favor, with the prevailing belief that Duffee would either get the KO, or Frank Mir would get a submission. We got a bit of both, as we got the KO, but it was from Frank Mir. It was 73 seconds of non-stop throwing, with Mir hurting Duffee on multiple occasions and Duffee firing back but not putting the former champion away. One massive left hand later, Duffee was snoozing and Frank Mir was celebrating.

Todd Duffee vs. Frank Mir

What was the high point of the fight?

Duffee threw a staggeringly sloppy right hand with no real technique behind it. Frank Mir then slipped that and fired a left hand that wiped Duffee out. There was no need for an extra punch and John McCarthy came in and stopped the fight.

Where do these two go from here?

Mir (18-9) stays in the top 10, having picked up back-to-back wins inside of 2 minutes. There is no need to bury Mir just yet, especially if he can continue to destroy guys with his powerful striking. I don't know if that means he should be immediately thrust back into title contention, especially given the fact that he'd lost 4 in a row before these wins, but someone like Ben Rothwell could be in his sights soon.

Duffee (9-3) obviously goes nowhere near the top 10, likely ever again. He's definitively a guy who will either get KO'd or win by KO, and his record backs it up. Presumably this is time for him to reassess his career, get back in the gym, and get a steady diet of lower-level heavies he is tailor made to beat.

Watch now, later, or never?

Watch now. It's sloppy as all hell (Duffee is 99% responsible for that) and ends abruptly and violently. You surely have 73 seconds to spare.
