A big UFC Fight Night: Duffee vs. Mir co-main event between former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson and rising contender Tony Ferguson was a match-up of old guard vs. new guard. It was expected to be an intriguing fight to see where both men stood in the division.

It was a very close first round to start off. Thomson hit a beautiful takedown but Ferguson rolled and got back to his feet before Thomson could get on top. The strikes were relatively event with Ferguson catching Thomson with jabs and body kicks while Josh was successful on the counter. Ferguson attempted a flying knee and then got caught in mid-air and taken down. Thomson went for ground-and-pound and wound up having to defend a triangle choke, which he did.

In the 2nd round, A huge elbow stunned Thomson to the canvas as Ferguson immediately went for the finish. Hard ground-and-pound by Ferguson continued to bust Thomson up, but he survived. As Ferguson kept looking for the finish on the ground, Herb Dean restarted them standing after Ferguson grabbed the fence. Thomson had an all-timed spinning backfist that was not only off target but also showed he was on wobbly legs. Seconds later, Ferguson was going for a triangle choke on his back against a man who had never been submitted. Ferguson unleashed hard elbows while on his back as he looked for the choke. The profuse bleeding caused by the elbows perhaps benefited Thomson as he wriggled free. Ferguson transitioned to a kimura and then went for crucifix position. Amazingly, through all of this, Thomson escaped and went back to exchanging with Ferguson in an absolute thriller. There was no quit in Thomson.

The 3rd round was more of the same from Thomson, who opened up another cut on Thomson's forehead with a standing elbow. He also hurt him with a knee to the body, went for a d'arce choke soon after, but Thomson fought his way out of it. To Thomson's credit, he was throwing caution to the wind and looking for something to change the outcome, but Ferguson was just too quick and too active and on point for him. No doubt a hugely entertaining clash. Oh, and throughout the fight, Ferguson rolled away from Thomson like a ninja to avoid getting hit or for him to get pounced on the ground. That was fun.

Official Result: Tony Ferguson (19-3) def. Josh Thomson (20-8, 1 NC) via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

Ferguson improves to an incredible 9-1 in the UFC and gets the biggest W of his career. Thomson drops his 3rd straight and his future in the UFC is in doubt.
