Chad Mendes has fractured his right thumb during UFC 189's main event, provides X-ray picture.

As MMA Fighting reports, Chad Mendes broke his right thumb early in the first round of his UFC 189 encounter with newly crowned interim featherweight champion Conor McGregor, last Saturday in Las Vegas.

From what it seems, the hurt thumb didn't influence the fight. His manager, Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., explained that Mendes was informed about the fracture only when he visited his doctor on Monday afternoon.

Mendes jumped into the UFC 189 main event against McGregor only on two-weeks notice, to replace featherweight champion Jose Aldo, who pulled out of the fight citing a broken rib. Despite a few good takedowns and elbows from the guard, Mendes wasn't able to keep the Irishman down and was battered with hard shots at the end of the second frame, until the referee stepped in.

Until now, it remains unclear wether the thumb will need surgery or not, and Mendes will find out later this week.
