UFC 189 proved to be an unprecedented success, even though the original main event did not even take place that night in the Octagon. In the end, the two title fights surpassed expectations and the remainder of the main card saw ferocious finishes that sent the Las Vegas crowd home satisfied.

The main event between Conor McGregor and Chad Mendes certainly lived up to expectations and ended with a dramatic late stoppage in the second round for the Irishman. McGregor faced adversity in the form of Mendes' wrestling but was able to overcome it and eventually poured his remaining energy into the fight-finishing punches that downed the American.

Even though they were placed in a co-main event that was barely promoted, Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald took part in an incredible five-round beauty of a fight that ended in the final round with a brutal knockout. It was a back-and-forth affair that featured all the drama, tension and momentum shifts that fans dream of in title fights. Lawler faced adversity numerous times in the fight and even looked as though he was done; at the very least, he was likely down on the scorecards. In the end, Lawler found another level late in the fight and finished his Canadian foe with vicious intent.

Thomas Almeida produced one of the more picture-perfect finishes in recent memory when he landed a flying knee finish on Brad Pickett in the second round of their main card fight. He faced adversity early on yet found a way to overcome that and close out the contest in style.
