UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor was supposed to be "Aldo vs. McGregor", but it didn't make the enthusiasm for Conor McGregor's PPV main event debut even the slightest bit subdued. Instead of Aldo's featherweight title, an interim featherweight belt was on the line in front of a raucous pro-McGregor crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

They (mostly Conor) wasted no time jawing in the pre-fight staredown. McGregor threw a spinnig back kick right away and then a knee and got taken down. Conor got back up and the two got in a brief clinch but Conor stuffed the takedown. They both exchanged strikes.  A good straight left tagged Mendes. Chad missed with a right hand. Another left hand caught Mendes but he shrugged it off. McGregor threw several more spinning back kicks. Conor was standing right in front of him. Mendes threw a head kick that was blocked. Good left hand by Conor. Mendes pushed forward with punches and then got the takedown. Conor got cut with ground-and-pound but got back to his feet and was hit with a left hand on the way up.  Mendes cracked Conor with a right hand.  Superman punch by McGregor and then a left to the body.  A left hand staggered Mendes briefly. Chad came right back and threw a right. Mendes changed levels and got into side control. McGregor regained halfg uard. Mendes went for a guillotine choke but lost it. McGregor got to full guard to end a frenetic 1st round.

McGregor charged forward and threw his kicks. Mendes had a takedown attempt but McGregor sprawled and stuffed. Conor caught Mendes with clean punches and body shots. Mendes got another takedown. Heavy elbows found a home from top position. McGregor threw strikes off of his back and got warned for a 12-to-6 elbow. Mendes complained of illegal upward elbows but Herb Dean disagreed. Mendes landed more big shots. With 1 minute left, Mendes kept himself in Conor's guard and damaged. Chad passed his guard and went for the guillotine choke but Conor escaped and then started firing away when he got to his feet. Then Mendes fired back. Went for a takedown and got stuffed.  McGregor continued to whack Mendes and then dropped him with a huge left hand. Mendes turtled up and McGregor got the stoppage.

Official result: Conor McGregor (17-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) def. Chad Mendes (17-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) via TKO (punches) at 4:57 of round 2 to become the interim UFC featherweight champion.

The Irish faithful roared in approval. Aldo vs. McGregor still lives on, but when will we see it? Only time will tell.
