Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

A striker vs. grappler contest between Brandon Thatch and Gunnar Nelson was the second fight on the main card of UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor in Las Vegas, Nevada. At risk was the loser going on a two-fight losing streak in a crowded welterweight division.

As much as Thatch's striking was rightfully touted, it was Nelson and his karate-based striking that led to the finish. The Iceland native dropped Thatch with a left hook and straight right and then pounced from there. He dominated a hurt Thatch with his grappling skills, then "Rukus" gave up his back, Nelson locked in the rear-naked choke and forced the tapout.

Official result: Gunnar Nelson (14-1-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) def. Brandon Thatch (11-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) via submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:54 of round 1

It's another 1st round submission win for Nelson, and another rear-naked choke loss for Thatch.
