MMA Outposts - The weekend ahead in regional MMA

Welcome to MMA Outposts, you weekly look at the most intriguing, important or bizarre fights this weekend from around the globe. The focus here is on regional MMA and as such UFC, Bellator, ONE FC and WSoF are excluded.

RXF 18: Alexandru Lungu (10-3) vs Jeff Monson (55-23-1)

Jeff Monson continues his three fight tour of Europe with a showdown in Romania against local combat legend Alexandru Lungu. The Snowman needs no introduction to long time MMA fans and still remains an active feature on the regional circuit and a true world warrior. The grappling maestro has fought in no less than 19 countries in his 18 year career and this stop off in Romania will make it 20 as he battles former international kickboxer and judoka Lungu. The 40 year old man mountain is a specialist at putting the hurt on fellow grizzled veterans, with deceptive skills for a super heavyweight.

Imortal FC 1: Delson Heleno (25-8) vs Julio Cesar Araujo (7-0)

Everyone loves an old war horse versus young lion, not literally of course. We in no way condone animal cruelty here at MMA Outposts. In MMA terms however we love it and this fight is exactly that. IFL stalwart Heleno is experienced, well rounded with legitimate Black belt BJJ skills but has shown steady signs of decline in the last couple of years. An underwhelming performance on TUF Brazil and a pair of 1st round knockout defeats in his last 4 fights will fill the undefeated Gaucho with confidence. This is an undoubted jump up in competition for Araujo but everything so far in his career points towards him being capable of going all the way to the big leagues.

Fight Nights Battle 19: Rasul Mirzaev (10-0) vs Sebastian Romanowski (10-4)

Controversial former Bellator signee Rasul Mirzaev puts his perfect record on the line against Poland's Sebastian Romanowski. Mirzaev, who spent time in prison for manslaughter stemming from a tragically fatal incident outside a Russian night club in 2011, is a former world Sambo champion and would be without a doubt the biggest scalp on Romanowski's CV should he be able to pull off the upset here. Mirzaev will be looking to continue his smooth sailing inside the cage and try to answer the question, how many impressive wins does it take to make the world forget your manslaughter charge?

ACB 20: Eduard Vartanyan (10-1) vs Amirkhan Adaev (8-1)

Absolute Challenge Berkut continues to put on quality cards to match it's continental competition and the Chechyna based promotion is at it again with it's 20th edition. Headlining is an intriguing contest of closely matched lightweights as Vartanyan and Adaev square off in one half of the promotions lightweight Grand Prix semi-finals. Vartanyan has faced the better competition on paper but faces an opponent high on confidence following two strong wins under the ACB umbrella. Adaev was undersized as a welterweight and now confident, in the right division and hungry to reach the final Vartanyan will have his hands full.

CES MMA 29: Chuck O'Neil (15-6) vs Dominique Steele (12-5)

Between them O'Neil and Steele have toppled some very respectable names including; Ricardo Funch, Marcus Davis, Nate Moore, Ryan Thomas and Dan Hornbuckle. That said, neither has found the necessary consistency to suggest they can break the minor league ceiling and take their careers to the next level. Cold Steel O'Neil had a one and done stint with the UFC following a characteristically inconsistent stint on TUF but has looked very much at home in Rhode Island's CES MMA going 6-1 and collecting gold in the process. Defeating Steele would be another feather in the champs cap as he looks to cement himself as one of the North East's premier MMA attractions. Likewise Steele could return home to Ohio with gold around his waist and a target on his back for the Mid-West's up and comers.
