Matt Hamill should think about changing his nickname from "Hammer" to "Hero". A virus infection might have kept him off his WSOF 19 main event fight against Thiago Silva last weekend, but it didn't stop him from saving a little boy from a potential car accident.
On Tuesday, the former UFC fighter went to visit his family in Ohio, when a car passed him by in the wrong direction on a crowded one-way highway. The women driving the car has obviously been disoriented and tried to avoid the contraflow.
"Everyone was going like 70 miles per hour. She was driving the wrong way, just kind of swerving around," Hamill told MMAFighting.com. "She was going slower but she was going on the wrong side of the street, and you could see her face, she was kind of drooling. There was obviously something going on with her that just wasn't right. She was breathing fine, but you could just tell there was something, some issues. [...] It seemed like Pac-Man, trying to avoid all the little ghosts. She was all over the place."
Hamill made a brave decision in a split second, turned his car and went after the woman, who has already trailed off onto a grass median by then, with her car still rolling. Hamill left his own vehicle on the median and chased her by foot, trying to convince the woman to stop, but she has been "largely unresponsive", he said. It was then, when he realized that a little boy, no older than five years old, was sitting in the backseat screaming.
"A lot of the cars, they had been honking. And I'm sure that the noise and the car just weaving (upset him)," Hamill said. "He had a seatbelt on and he was in his car seat, but I'm sure it was a scary situation and he was worried what was going on. The mother was just weaving all over the road."
So Hamill punched out the window of the car and stopped it himself, saving the woman and the boy from a potential crash.
"He was fine and everything, just a little bit upset, but if she hadn't been stopped I definitely feel like someone would've ran into something. The mother was on drugs and had been drinking apparently."
Police later arrested the woman, who was ultimately charged with felony DWI and handed the boy over to a relative. They also thanked Hamill for his quick thinking.
Hats off, Matt "The Hero" Hamill!
