Ronaldo Souza went from having a very tough, competitive opponent ahead for him to meeting someone he has already beaten in the blink of an eye. Exit Yoel Romero, enter Chris Camozzi. Jacare was one of the biggest favorites in UFC history going in, and rightfully so - after all, he submitted Camozzi quite easily the first time they met. As it turns out, the second fight ended the same way.
After landing some hard shots on the feet, Jacare took Camozzi down and passed his guard. He got a hold of an arm and while Camozzi did briefly defend with his legs, Jacare made a simple adjustment and it was over for Camozzi. He submitted before Souza could even crank on the arm.
Official Result: Jacare Souza defeated Chris Camozzi by verbal submission (armbar), 2:33 of round 1
What was the high point of the fight?
Jacare's effortless passing. The man is an absolute master on the ground and he's so much fun to watch.
Where do these two go from here?
Souza isn't going to go much of anywhere, unfortunately. Camozzi was a last-minute replacement and the win does nothing to advance his career. He is firmly behind Luke Rockhold in terms of getting a title shot now, and will stay there until either Rockhold gets his shot or Jacare beats someone that vaults him ahead in the chase.
Camozzi got his job back by taking the last-minute fight. He'll be granted another fight in the promotion against someone much closer to his level, and he'll probably stick around for a while longer.
Watch now, later, or never?
Later. Unless you're a big Jacare mark, it was just a standard mauling.
