Is there a potential likeness rights battle the UFC isn't fighting? Probably not, but there is at least an argument to be made that Mortal Kombat is biting the style of one of the UFC's strawweight fighters. Video game news website Kotaku recently brought to light Felice Herrig's dismay over her pretty stunning resemblance to the Mortal Kombat character Cassie Cage. She's currently preparing to fight rising prospect Paige VanZant at UFC on Fox 15 on April 18th, but she could have another battle outside the cage in front of her.
Herrig first made note of the similarities several months ago, but in the days leading up to the game's release, she's become more certain than ever that she's the unwitting muse behind the pixels.
Someone has brought it to my attention that I look like Cassie Cage in the new #MortalKombatX game. And I gotta say this actually does look like me.. Did they steal my likeness ?
Hmm ok. I thought it was similar before with the bubble gum but this CAN NOT be a coincidence ?!?!! Aside from the resemblance , watch #cassiecage finishing move
#MORTALKOMBATX
Alright #MORTALKOMBATX This is no longer a coincidence #cassiecage
I don't know if she'd have a case strong enough for court, after all, it's pretty hard to claim that doing things like chewing bubble gum, taking selfies, and posing are all personal brand trademarks, but the resemblance is uncanny. It also wouldn't be the first time that a game has made small changes to the appearance or name of a real person to skirt likeness rights. Anyone think Felice has a case here?
