Yoel Romero injured, out of UFC on Fox 15 co-main event vs. Jacare Souza

It appears that Yoel Romero vs. Ronaldo Souza isn't meant to happen.

Joshua Lindsey-USA TODAY Sports

So far, we're 0-for-2 in actually getting to see Yoel Romero vs. Ronaldo Souza happen inside the Octagon. The first cancellation was caused by Jacare contracting pneumonia prior to UFC 184, and now it's Romero's turn to withdraw. According to MMA Fighting, the 2000 Olympic medalist in wrestling tore a ligament and meniscus in his knee and won't be facing the Brazilian at UFC on Fox 15 next Saturday in New Jersey.

Romero (9-1) last fought at UFC 178 in Las Vegas, winning a controversial 3rd round TKO over Tim Kennedy. in what is now known as "Stoolgate". The controversy stemmed from Romero almost getting KO'd at the end of the 2nd round, but he managed to get extra time to recover in between rounds as his corner took an unprecedented 40 days to get him off the stool and leave the cage. Aided by the extra time, the Cuban stormed back and finished Kennedy just a minute into the final round.  Romero is otherwise on a 5 fight winning streak, with all of his bouts taking place at 185 lbs.

Jacare (21-3, 1 NC) has won 7 straight, including a superb performance against Gegard Mousasi which saw him submit the former Strikeforce LHW champion with a guillotine choke. It was expected that the winner between him and Romero would be no more than 1 win away from a title shot, if not get a title shot outright against the Chris Weidman/Vitor Belfort winner.

It is unknown whether or not Jacare will remain on the card and fight a replacement opponent on just a week's notice, or if they'll bump a different fight to the co-main slot.
