It might be a good thing for Bellator that Liam McGeary managed to take their light heavyweight title off of Emanuel Newton at Bellator 134, because they'd be in a bit of a quandry right now otherwise. According to The MMA Report, Newton tested positive for marijuana on a secondary test at the event, which took place on February 27th at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT.
Newton (25-8-1, 8-2 Bellator) has been suspended for three months and fined $3000 according to the report. He also has to submit a clean drug test to formally end the suspension.
He picked up an light heavyweight title when he defeated King Mo Lawal in 2013, then unified the title when he defeated champion Attila Vegh at Bellator 113 in March 2014. He successfully defended the title twice before dropping a decision to McGeary at the event.
Neither Newton or Bellator have offered comment on the failure at this time.
