Mark Hunt on loss to Fabricio Werdum: I was trying to steal cookies out of his jar

UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt delves into his loss to Fabricio Werdum last year.

Two months after he face planted Roy Nelson in a ‘Knockout of the Year' winner, Mark Hunt thought he could follow it up with another spectacular finish against Fabricio Werdum in an interim title fight in Mexico City.

While a vicious finish took place, it was Hunt who found himself on the wrong side of the highlight reel.

"I got caught. I made a mistake and got caught," Hunt told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. "I was trying to steal cookies out of [Werdum's] jar. It ended up a highlight reel, so you can't make those mistakes."

Unlike the Nelson fight, which took place in Saitama, Japan under circumstances that allowed Hunt enough time to fully prepare himself, UFC 180 was on far shorter notice, as he was a late replacement for injury-prone heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Faced with a worrisome weight cut and high altitude preparation, Hunt was already aware ahead of time that the odds were stacked against him.

"Yeah, it was pretty exhausting," Hunt said. "It was one of the those things, I don't realize it when I fight that quickly. It's what happens. I lost the fight. That's what happens."

However, Hunt, who was also dealing with personal problems and "domestic stuff" at the time, did not fall back on those excuses for his shortcomings.

"I can't use anything as an excuse. I got caught trying to steal Werdum's freakin' cookie jar. I got caught. I made a mistake and got caught and got knocked out, and that's what happens."
