The UFC Fight Night preliminary card in Porto Alegre, Brazil was a bit slow to deliver on entertainment, but things began to change with a pair of terrific knockouts. Here's a rundown on all of the results from the five bouts, including a big showing for Canada's Matt Dwyer.
On Fight Pass, lightweight Ivan Jorge got the Brazilians off to a winning start with a 29-28 (x3) decision victory over Josh Shockley, The loss drops Shockley to 0-2 and potentially out of the UFC, while "Batman" improves to 2-1 after a tough loss against Rodrigo Damm.
The FS1 prelims opened up with bantamweight Douglas Silva earning a unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) over Cody Gibson, who now falls to 1-3 inside the Octagon. Silva gets his first UFC win after seein his undefeated run end vs. Zubaira Tukhugov. Featherweight Mike de la Torre provided the first finish of the card by decking Tiago dos Santos with a left hook. "El Cucuy" had been landing his left hook at will and he was able to score a knockdown and then finish the fight with a series of right hands on the ground. Leon Roberts stopped the fight at 2:59 of the opening round. It's a first UFC win for de la Torre, who improves to 1-1 (1 NC), while Tiago Trator falls to 1-1 and sees his overall winning streak end at 10.
Matt Dwyer provided the highlight of the preliminary card (and likely the entire night) with an unexpected, perfectly timed superman punch to the temple of William Macario. The TUF Brazil 2 finalist's legs went to rubber as he fell flat on his face, took a few more punches, and then the referee stopped the fight at 3:14 of round 1. Dwyer picks up his first UFC win and keeps his 100% finishing streak alive in his 8th career win, while "Patolino" falls to 1-3 and probably isn't going to stay in the promotion beyond this fight.
In the final preliminary fight of the evening, Jessica Andrade and Marion Reneau produced a surprise result. The favored Andrade was able to force an early knockdown, but Reneau regained her senses and immediately set up a triangle choke after the Brazilian dove into her guard. Andrade escaped the first attempt but went right back into the guard, and this time Reneau secured the triangle choke perfectly and forced the tap. Reneau is now 2-0 in the UFC with her win at 1:54 of round 1, and she does so at the expense of Andrade's 3 fight winning streak.
