Fedor's opponent revealed for Rizin New Year’s Eve show

New, comments

Legendary Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko finally has an opponent for his NYE fight.

Rizin Fighting Federation announced at a Friday press conference that Fedor Emelianenko will meet Jaideep Singh at their New Year's Eve show at the Saitama Super Arena.

MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani was first to report the opponent back in October. However, the promotion later refuted the report and announced that they had a different opponent in mind.

Things have since gone full circle.

Emelianenko (34-4-1NC) is set to return to mixed martial arts for the first time since June 2012, where he knocked out Pedro Rizzo in St. Petersburg. The Russian heavyweight compiled an eight-year 28-fight undefeated streak that included wins over the likes of UFC champions Andrei Arlovski, Tim Sylvia and Antonio Nogueira, as well as Mirko Filipovic, Mark Coleman, and Kevin Randleman. However, once Fedor returned to North America, he lost three consecutive fights under the Strikeforce banner before returning to Russia to finish on a three-fight win streak.

The Russian's opponent, Jaideep Singh, is 40-10 as a kickboxer but only 2-0 in professional MMA. He most recently defeated Carlos Toyota at Deep Impact 73.

Rizin FF is set to hold a World Grand Prix event over the course of three days (Dec 29-31). The first ambitious component of that will be an eight-man tournament that will begin on Dec 29th and conclude on Dec 31st. The promotion's even more ambitious goal is to create a platform where many of the world's top organizations can collaborate on "mega-tournaments." So far, Rizin will cooperate with Bellator MMA, KSW, BAMMA, Bushido, Jungle Fights, and Desert Force, many of whom have provided talent for the eight-man tournament.
