This Saturday night, HBO presents one of the most anticipated boxing fights of the year, as Miguel Cotto takes on Canelo Alvarez. Cotto vs. Canelo is live on HBO PPV this Saturday, November 21 with a fight time of 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT. Bloody Elbow will have live fight night coverage.
There is a lot to love about this fight - the storyline of the aging superstar vs. the rising superstar, the uncertainty to the outcome, the idea of establishing an heir to Mayweather's throne... All of these are good reasons to watch. But perhaps the best reason is that it should be a tremendously exciting fight. Don't believe me? Just check out their most recent fights.
Mookie already shared the most recent outing for Canelo - his 3 round war with James Kirkland this past May (as exciting and dramatic a 3 round, mostly one-sided KO as you will ever see). Here, let's look at the most recent Miguel Cotto fight - a June encounter with Daniel Geale.
For some background, this was fight #3 in the resurgent Freddie Roach phase of Cotto's career. The tough Geale came in at 31-3, but 2-2 in his last 4. There were two schools of thought on this one - one side argued it was a true test for Cotto, while the other said Geale had effectively been so compromised by Gennady Golovkin, that he was no longer a worthy opponent.
The result? An entertaining and dominant performance - but not one that settled the debate on Cotto. For that, we'll have to wait until Saturday night.
