UFC women's strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk defended her belt for the second time against Valerie Letourneau and won the fight by unanimous decision. The bout wasn't as dominant as the odds showed -- the champ closed as a -1400 favourite -- but most of the rounds in this match-up were competitive.
Jedrzejczyk had more success on the feet as expected, but Letourneau landed her fair share of strikes. The Canadian was able to take the titleholder down once in the first round, but wasn't able to implement her ground game from then on. Jedrzejczyk proved why she holds UFC gold when she pulled away in the championship rounds.
What was the high point of the fight?
The high point of this fight was the striking exchanges between the two. As I mentioned above, Jedzejczyk landed more damaging shots, but Letourneau surprised most fans with her big shots as well. Despite Letourneau dropping her first loss at strawweight, she still impressed as she was able to hang in there for all 25 minutes. It was a fun battle so the high point was definitely the striking between the two elite strawweights.
Where do these two go from here?
Jedrzejczyk will go on to defend her belt, most likely against Claudia Gadelha in a rematch. Her first meeting with Gadelha was a very close fight that Jedrzejczyk won by a somewhat controversial split decision. But for now, Jedrzejczyk is the best strawweight on the planet and will continue to clear out the 115-pound division.
Watch now, later, or never?
This was a fun fight but not the type of war that is a must-watch right away. Definitely spend 25 minutes of your time at some point to watch this, but not right away.
