During Team Alpha Male's radio show, host Justin Buchholz broke a bit of news concerning his teammate in Paige VanZant. The popular strawweight prospect was originally headlining UFC Fight Night 80 against Joanne Calderwood, but according to the UFC vet in Buchholz, Jojo has been pulled from the contest prompting a switch in the Dec 10 headliner.
"I've got a huge announcement. So I found out that Paige VanZant's opponent... Calderwood's out. She's out. Paige, she's fighting Rose Namajunas," Buchholz said on Stud Show Radio. "That's a main event slot, so it's going to be an awesome fight."
The nature of Calderwood's removal from the card wasn't disclosed, and as of this writing, the change hasn't been confirmed just yet.
If his statements are accurate though, this would mean a huge step up in competition for VanZant. The 21-year-old is 3-0 in the UFC, and while Calderwood would've been a stiff test and her first top 10 opponent, Namajunas is ranked even higher at #3.
Update: It's official. Dana White announced the new booking over his Twitter account:
