Gegard Mousasi willing to replace Chris Weidman against Vitor Belfort at UFC 184

Former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi threw his name into the hat and revealed interest in a match-up against Vitor Belfort at UFC 184.

After it was revealed on Friday afternoon that middleweight champion Chris Weidman was forced to withdraw from his anticipated title defence against Vitor Belfort at UFC 184, it became clear that the UFC's interest was to keep Belfort on the fight card if possible.

It appears the promotion was looking to set up an interim title fight against Lyoto Machida, but Belfort reportedly rejected that fight offer. Since then, another former champion by the name Gegard Mousasi has offered to replace Weidman in the contest.

Mousasi, who showed interest for the fight on twitter, suggested that a win over the former champion should position him as the No. 1 contender in the division.

It should be noted that Belfort's jiu-jitsu coach Gilbert Burns suggested several possibilities that the camp would be interested in if offered by the UFC. Mousasi was not one of them.

"I think that a fight against Yoel Romero, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Luke Rockhold or Mark Munoz wouldn't affect the training so much but against Machida it would be all different."

UFC 184 takes place Feb. 28 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
