VIDEO - Hopkins and Kovalev staredown almost turns messy

The unification bout for the WBO, WBA & IBF titles nearly happened early during a face-off at the press conference for Bernard Hopkins VS Sergey Kovalev.

On Saturday, November 8, at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Bernard "The Alien" Hopkins will meet Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev in an exciting light heavyweight unification title bout live on HBO World Championship Boxing. Reporters at Tuesday's press event were almost treated to a sneak preview of the fireworks to come when the pair of boxers nearly started trouble.

At the NYC Press Conference at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the two fighters squared off for a photo op at the end of the event, and it seemed that Kovalev did not like it when Hopkins got a little too close to him. The 49-year old champ did not waste any time putting the Russian in his place, swatting his hands down and getting in Kovalev's face to give him a mouthful. From my angle, I was not able to hear what Hopkins was saying, but the look on his face says enough to get an idea.

This is not the first time that these two have faced off to promote this fight, as the first time around back in August it seemed a bit more lighthearted. However, as the fight draws nearer, Hopkins has definitely switched on "Executioner mode" and is mentally preparing for war.

In April, Hopkins defeated Beibut Shumenov to win the WBA Light Heavyweight World Championship, breaking his own record as the oldest fighter in history to win a world title, which he set in May of 2011 after defeating Jean Pascal at age 46. Kovalev comes off of the third defense of his WBO Light Heavyweight Title on HBO, defeating Blake Caparello by TKO on August 2.
