Abel Trujillo's year started off with fighting an injury replacement, then he had a fight canceled because his opponent was injured, and now he's the one who is injured and out of a scheduled match-up. Trujillo was set to face Ross Pearson next week at UFC Fight Night in Maine, but an undisclosed injury has scrapped those plans. UFC officials have since decided to ax Gray Maynard's bout with Fabricio Camoes and instead match Pearson with Maynard on the main card.
Maynard (11-3-1) is without a win over the past 2 years and is coming off a brutal TKO loss to Nate Diaz at the TUF 18 Finale. The former lightweight title challenger has fallen on hard times inside the Octagon since failing to usurp Frankie Edgar as champion back in 2011. The 35-year-old's fight with Camoes was supposed to occur at UFC 176, but was moved to the Maine show after 176 was canceled.
Pearson (15-7, 1 NC) returned to lightweight after a 1-1 run at featherweight, and the TUF 9 winner scored TKO wins over George Sotiropoulos and Ryan Couture before a no-contest (knee to head of a downed opponent) vs. Melvin Guillard ended his streak. The Englishman dominated Diego Sanchez this past June but somehow lost a split decision in what is sure to be the worst robbery of 2014.
UFC Fight Night: Maine sees Ryan Bader and Ovince St. Preux in the main event, with Tim Boetsch and Brad Tavares in the Fox Sports 1-televised co-main event.
