UFC featherweight Brian Ortega tests positive for same anabolic steroid as Black House teammate Kevin Casey

Two RFA champs. Two teammates. Two recent 1st round wins in the UFC. Two failed drug tests.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Not long after it was revealed that UFC middleweight Kevin Casey had tested positive for the anabolic steroid drostanolone following his UFC 175 win over Bubba Bush, news has come in that featherweight Brian Ortega has popped for the exact same substance. As first reported by Sherdog, Ortega failed his UFC on Fox 12 drug test and has since been fined $2,500 and suspended for 9 months. Additionally, his 99 second submission win against Mike De La Torre is now a no contest.

What's interesting in this case is that Casey and Ortega are both teammates at Black House MMA and were previously champions in Resurrection Fighting Alliance. The only other notable Black House fighter to fail a drug test is Rafael Cavalcante, who tested positive for stanozolol while he was in Strikeforce.

Without making any direct accusations, it certainly looks suspicious for two fighters tied to the same camp and same promotion (both run by Ed Soares) to get caught with the same banned steroid. It's certainly a bad start to the UFC for Ortega, who came into the promotion undefeated and touted as a good prospect in the featherweight division, and he justified that with his impressive performance against De La Torre, only to find out he's failed his drug test in his debut.

The UFC has yet to release an official statement regarding Ortega.
