The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been going viral recently, but if you've been living under the rock, the challenge is simple: If you get called out, you have 24 hours to either dump a bucket of ice water on your head or donate to an ALS charity. Once you finish, you then get to call out other people.
Countless high profile celebrities and athletes have all joined in the action (with most of them also donating while still getting dumped with ice water), and MMA personalities have started participating as well. Check out several clips below which includes UFC executives Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta, Ronda Rousey, B.J. Penn, Bas Rutten, Chris Weidman, and my personal favorite ice bucket clip, Frankie Edgar.
Dana White was called out by Scott O'neill:
Lorenzo Fertitta accepted Dana's challenge, and upped the ante a bit:
Rousey, who was also called out by Dana, did it right after a TV appearance too
Shaq, who was also called out by Dana White, "accepted" his challenge:
Bas Rutten did it on the set of Inside MMA. I do like his call outs:
I would normally say that being shirtless and wearing board shorts is cheating, but that's probably how B.J. Penn dresses on a normal day in Hawaii anyway:
UFC middleweight champ, Chris Weidman:
The Four Horsewomen helping out WWE's Steph McMahon after Summer Slam:
Last but not the least, Frankie Edgar:
This is all good fun, and while some people may think these videos are 'silly' or 'getting old', the movement has actually raised millions of dollars for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease as commonly known, in the past few months. During that short time span, ALS research has received well over 10 times what they received the entire year before.
For those who want to join the cause, you can go to alsa.org... or maybe you guys can also make your own Ice Bucket clips and send enough nominations to convince Kid Nate to join in on the fun as well. It's about time we blame him for something positive.
