Kell Brook def. Shawn Porter, Majority Dec (117-111, 116-112, 114-114)
In a battle of undefeated rising fighters, UK combatant Kell Brook scored the upset win, defeating Shawn Porter by majority decision. It was an incredibly close fight that was tough to judge, with both men having a lot of success at times. Porter's game was what we have frequently seen from him as he looked to fight his way inside and rough Brook up from the clinch. Brook meanwhile used a counter punching game to catch Porter as he came inside. That battle of aggression vs. counter striking kept up throughout the fight, though as the fight progressed, Brook seemed to gain confidence and turn the tide more in his favor. Porter fought hard until the final bell, making this a tough fight to score, but at the end of the day, Brook remains undefeated and takes home the Welterweight title.
In the broadcast opener, Omar Figueroa successfully defended his Lightweight title against Daniel Estrada. The two men put on an excellent, action packed fight, marked by numerous high volume exchanges. Figueroa consistently got the best of those exchanges, winning the rounds. In round 9, Figueroa landed a perfect clean right hand to drop Estrada. The challenger made it back to his feet, but Figueroa swarmed, poured on the pressure, and gave the referee no choice but to step in and wave the fight off. Good fight, and a good win from Figueroa, who will now move up to 140 pounds.
Also on the card, Anthony Dirrell defeated Sakio Bika via unanimous decision in a rematch from their draw last year. This was an ugly fight from the opening bell, characterized primarily by clinchwork, takedowns, and referee admonishments. Neither man ever got into a groove, but Dirrell landed the cleaner punches throughout, taking the win 117-110, 116-111, 114-113.
