Donald Cerrone taking on Bobby Green in UFC 178 co-main event

New, comments

Looks like a UFC deal with Eddie Alvarez isn't quite as close as was hoped as word has come down that Donald Cerrone is facing Bobby Green at UFC 178.

David Manning-USA TODAY Sports

A couple of weeks back, word started to surface that a big fight announcement was coming to UFC 178, one that would give the card a serious boost. It was later revealed that the expected bout was very likely Donald Cerrone vs. Eddie Alvarez, contingent, of course, on the UFC being able to negotiate Alvarez away from Bellator. First there was a rumor, and then nothing. Now, it appears that whatever deal may have been in the works, it's not happening anytime soon. Guilherme Cruz reported, via Twitter, that Cerrone has indeed been booked for UFC 178, but that his opponent will be Bobby Green, fresh off his victory over Josh Thomson at UFC on Fox: Lawler vs. Brown.

Of course, added to the Alvarez dimension in this fight announcement, is the fact that that the UFC has already been promoting McGregor vs. Poirier as the main event. Still, it's early days in the card build up, which is still a month and a half away. Plenty of time to change over the posters. In the meantime, Green, who was slated to take on Jorge Masvidal, lower on the card gets a big bump up. In his place, facing off against Masvidal, UFC exec Dave Sholler revealed, will be James Krause.

Krause enters this bout off a less than desireable win over Jamie Varner, in which Varner broke his ankle early in the fight and proceeded to fight on the injury for the entirety of the first round, before telling the referee that he would be unable to continue. It was a gutsy performance from Varner, but with little else to be taken away from the fight. Here's the updated UFC 178 lineup:

Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso
Donald Cerrone vs. Bobby Green
Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier
Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki
Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero
Amanda Nunes vs. Cat Zingano
Brian Ebersole vs. John Howard
Patrick Côté vs. Stephen Thompson
Kevin Lee vs. Jon Tuck
James Krause vs. Jorge Masvidal
Manvel Gamburyan vs. Cody Gibson
