Jon Jones apologizes to fans for UFC 178 withdrawal, scheduled to have surgery tomorrow

After a torn meniscus and sprained ankle forced him out of a highly anticipated fight with Daniel Cormier, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is set to have surgery on Thursday.

By now you probably know that Jon Jones is out of a scheduled UFC 178 showdown with fierce rival Daniel Cormier. The bout has since been re-booked for UFC 182 on January 3rd. In a statement (status update?) published by Jones on his Facebook account, the reigning light heavyweight champion apologized to fans for the news and also announced plans for surgery:

I'd like to apologize to all the fans who were excited for UFC 178. Earlier this week, I suffered an injury while training for the fight. I'm having surgery tomorrow and I'm focused on recovering as quickly as possible. I look forward to getting back in the gym and defending my title on Jan. 3 in Las Vegas.

As reported earlier today, the injuries stemmed from Jones getting in some wrestling practice with new teammate Alistair Overeem at Greg Jackson's camp in Albuquerque.

The new main event of UFC 178, scheduled for September 27th in Las Vegas, is a flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso.
