With World Series of Fighting 12 in the books, there's a much bigger card planned for the end of the year that could be the promotion's best one to date. Earlier in the week,MMA Junkie reported that officials are targeting a welterweight title match-up between Rousimar Palhares and Jon Fitch, plus a lightweight title bout between Justin Gaethje and Melvin Guillard for a December 27th show to be televised on NBC.
Palhares (16-6) was scheduled to fight Fitch at WSOF 11, but those plans were scrapped after he withdrew to care for his ailing mother. Fitch (26-6-1) instead fought Dennis Hallman, who he beat by unanimous Fitchcision decision. Gaethje (12-0) headlined the first WSOF show on NBC last month when he defeated Nick Newell by 2nd round TKO, in what was his first title defense. Guillard (32-13-2) fought on the same card, where he TKO'd Gesias Cavalcante in the 2nd round in a rather debatable call by the referee. While Guillard did miss weight, the win was enough to earn the former UFC fighter a title shot anyway.
Neither fight has been made official, but we'll keep an eye out in case at least one of the two fights is confirmed for the targeted date. It should be noted that there is no UFC event scheduled for December 27th, so WSOF could have the MMA scene all to itself when all is said and done.
