Khabib Nurmagomedov to undergo surgery for torn meniscus, expected to remain on the sidelines until January

Although there was some hope that the knee injury that Khabib Nurmagomedov suffered last week would not permanently nix the compelling lightweight battle against Donald Cerrone, that all came crashing down when it was revealed that Khabib had torn his meniscus and would be required to undergo surgery.

The injury suffered was in Nurmagomedov's right knee and will force him to remain on the sidelines until January, 2015.

MMAFighitng.com was first to report the news.

Soon after the news broke, UFC President Dana White was contacted for a quick comment, where he expressed his frustration over the promotion's horrible luck when booking this contest.

"That fight is made -- it's done," White said. "Twenty minutes later, [Nurmagomedov] went into the gym and blew his knee out. Twenty. F---ing. Minutes. Later.

"It was done. The bout agreements, done. Email went out last night from [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva saying that this fight is done, both contracts were signed...boom, 20 minutes later, you're not going to f---ing believe this, the fight is off."

"The Eagle" picked up the biggest win of his UFC career when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision at UFC on FOX 11. The Dagestan native picked up his sixth straight win in the UFC, and extended his undefeated streak to an impressive 22-0. He will now have to patiently rest and recuperate his knee for the next few months before resuming his run to the title in 2015.
