The last time Zak Cummings fought in the UFC, he ended the undefeated streak of Yan Cabral. Tonight in Dublin, Ireland he had the chance to do that again versus Icelandic standout and grappling wizard Gunnar Nelson in the night's co-main event.
In round 1, the two combatants spent their time largely in a striking battle. Nelson, placed in his usual karate stance, landed knees to the body and straight rights, while Cummings struggled to land anything of note until the end of the round. Zak's biggest success came through his straight left as Nelson was popped a couple of times against the cage.
The 2nd round was more of the same as Nelson frustrated Cummings with his movement and continued popping him with right hands. Cummings could only muster up brief flurries and leg kicks. Nelson went for a headlock, dropped to the ground and quickly transitioned to back-mount, then full body triangle, and from there he softened up Cummings with strikes before sinking in the fight ending rear-naked choke. Another fight, another win for the still unbeaten Gunnar Nelson.
Official Result: Gunnar Nelson def. Zak Cummings via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:48 of round 2.
Nelson is 4-0 in the UFC and has submitted 3 of his opponents in the process. A move towards the top 10 could be in store for his next fight. Cummings drops to 2-1 in the UFC and is unable to pull off the upset.
